Offensive Breakdown: Analysis of The Denver Broncos Offense

The Denver Broncos have been struggling on offense this year. They have an excellent coach in Hackett and an all pro qb but haven't been able to put it together. They have been seeing a ton of man coverage on both early downs and also on 3rd down. Thus they are at 30% 3rd down efficiency. On 3rd down vs the Colts they were 0-13 on 3rd and 3 or more which is not very good. That leads to poor 1st down % as they have a 4th worst 29% at getting first downs. There are several reasons the offense has been off schedule which I highlight below.

Why the struggles:

1. They don't score TD. 6 Td's in 5 games is not very good. Lowest in the league. They are terrible in the red zone as well, ranking last in the league.   They are averaging .6 touchdowns per game in the red zon.

2. The wr don't get separation and are not very good at working the middle of the field. There are times when they have openings vs zone coverage but I don't think the wr take advantage of it.

Here vs. The Texans they run a good concept vs cover 2, but the spacing is a little off and Russ makes a poor read. They high low the will and both lb's play the shallow and you have the dig/in route behind it.

Another example.

Look at the #2 wr and the easy route adjustment he could make vs the coverage the Texans are in. He bends it he's wide open.  Like this is bad imo. Easy adjustment to make.

Also, to me it's single high cover 3 presnap, as a qb I would work the top side route concept. Lot of room to operate on the tops side of this formation.

Here vs the Texans, should hit the dig for a 20 yard gain. Run a route. It's slow motion. Seems like this should be an easy completion for a nice chunk of yardage.

3.  Defenses have been effective playing their outside wr in man coverage while playing underneath concepts on early downs. This has effected their boot, vertical passing game as wr have not been able to get open on some vertical concepts. Really has effected their play action downfield passing game on 1st and 2nd down. Texans did a great job against them using this concept. The Broncos won 16-9 but the Texans had a really good game plan.

vs Texans

Here is a similar situation vs the Chargers. They run boot but no one is open vertically down the field.

Here are 2 examples in the chargers game.  They run boot with the crossing route and their is no place to go with the ball. The Chargers do a nice job matching the coverage.

4. They also have been a little predictable, like running this little flip play vs the Colts. They ran the same play several times against the raiders and you can see the Colts adjusting to the formation. No body is fooled and it's a 3 yard loss on the play. I'm not spending 40 hours on film breaking it down but teams have seen some things and game planned effectively.  Take it out of the playbook or run a compliment because every team has sniffed it out.

5. They get themselves into some long 3rd down situations because of their inefficiency on early downs.  Too many 3rd and 10+ situations has really handcuffed the offense.

6. On 3rd down they are near the bottom at 30% efficiency. Their struggles were evident last week as they were 30% efficient vs the Colts.

7. Often times they have wr and qb not on the same page. A wr may run a slant and RW things its a hitch. He throws a fade and the wr runs a hitch. Russell has made some very bad decisions in games and has been slow to process. Really surprised by some of his decisions.

Here's another example where Russ has an easy check down but forces the issue downfield. Take what they give you. LB runs with the wheel, throw to the rb. Easy concept.

These are just some of the struggles and I'm excited to see the adjustments for their future games.

NFL PASS CONCEPTS # 6 SHALLOW CROSS

THE SHALLOW CROSS

THIS IS PART 6 OF MY UNIVERSAL ROUTE CONCEPT SERIES. I BELIEVE IN ROUTES IN THE PASSING GAME THAT YOU CAN RUN VS MAN OR ZONE AND TEACH QB THE PROPER READS. YOU HAVE ANSWERS VS ANY COVERAGE.

#6 SHALLOW CROSS

THE SHALLOW CROSS IS A GREAT ROUTE CONCEPT. IT IS EASY TO RUN AND A QB FAVORITE AT BOTH THE NFL AND COLLEGE LEVEL.

IT CAN BE RUN WITH THE RB RUNNING A CHUTE ROUTE OR AN OUT AND UP, WHICH YOU WILL SEE CERTAIN COACHES RUN.

ROUTE CONCEPT #1

NOW KEEP IN MIND YOU HAVE A TE RUNNING IT OR A WR DEPENDING ON THE FORMATION AND PERSONNEL GROUPINGS. YOU CAN RUN THIS CONCEPT WITH ANY PERSONNEL GROUPING WHICH MAKES IT A GREAT UNIVERSAL PLAY.

WORKING LEFT TO RIGHT, THE #1 WR HAS AN OPTION ROUTE. IF THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD IS OPEN HE WILL RUN A POST. IF IT IS NOT HE RUNS A 9 CUT. THE QB CAN SNEAK A PEAK WITH #1 BUT HE ISN'T THE PRIMARY WR. AT THE PROLEVEL THIS WILL BE AN ALERT THROW. #2 WILL RUN A DIG  ROUTE AND CAN SIT IT DOWN VS ZONE AND # 3 WILL RUN A SHALLOW(CAN RUN THIS WITH #4 WITH A RUB ROUTE OFF #3. RB RUNS A CHUTE TO THE FLAT.

NOW THE READS FOR THE QB:

1. SHALLOW: THE GOAL IS TO THE HIT THE SHALLOW

2. IF THE SHALLOW IS COVERED LOOK TO HIT THE SQUARE IN.

3.  THE RB

4. SOME TEAMS WILL THROW THE POST IN AS THE #3 READ BUT MANY COACHES I SPOKE WITH WILL USE THE POST AS A PRESNAP ALERT TYPE THROW.

IN THE NEXT EXAMPLE THE CROSS IS WIDE OPEN SO THE QB THROWS IT. NICE ROUTE EASY COMPLETION.

HERE;S THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD OPEN CONCEPT.
LOOK HOW QUICKLY THE BALL IS OUT. THIS MOF CONCEPT IS SOMETIMES AN ALERT THROW AT THE PRO LEVEL.

MIDDLE OF THE FIELD OPEN PRE SNAP. QB MAKES A QUICK DECISION AS IT'S COVER 4 WHICH MEANS MIDDLE OF THE FIELD MAY BE OPEN. HE MAKES A GOOD READ AND HITS IT FOR A BIG GAIN.

Here you see the shallow with the  dig window opening up.

Nice job taking a peak and hitting the wide open post route for a touchdown.

Game 1 Recap Nassau CC defeats Sussex 27-7

The Nassau Lions travelled to Suxxex CC and defeated Sussex 27-7. It was an overall great day for the Lions as they opened the season with a great victory.

Defensively, the Lions were flying around the field all day. The 1st string defense didn't allow a 1st down and they shut down the Sussex run game. The defense was only on the field for 34 plays and were outstanding except for a last minute touchdown. Dante Antione, Jaden Sinclair, Khristan Hernandez and Sonny Mayo were outstanding in pass coverage.Shaq McPherson also added an interception which changed the momentum early.

The defensive line was tremendous. Frantz Compere and Jordan Campbell led the defensive ends with 2 tackles each and were all over the field. Dashaun Polk and Cesar Villenueva were dominant on the interior, eating up double teams to free up the Linebackers.

Nyrel Sevilla led the way with 5 tackles and was in the backfield all day. He was selected player of the game for his performance. Fellow LB Jaden Martinez  added 4 tackles. Jalen Ware contributed a sack and had the hit of the day.

The Special teams performed well all day. They were led by Deyvon Wright who had some great returns. Wright also contributed a pass break up on defense. Here is 1 of his 2 40 yard returns.

Offensively the ground game led the way with the 3 headed monster of Brian Lowry, Kayee Williams and Albert Daniels pounding the football. The offensive line was led by Shamar Riley, Josh Becote, Thomas Goncalves, Anthony Blanco and Yosef Karmi. Greg King was rock solid at tight end as both a blocker and receiver.

Brian Lowry put the Lions up 7-0 on a nice run early in the 1st quarter. He touched the ball on all 4 plays on the drive, accounting for 45 yards and the 1st quarter score.

The passing game was diverse as LIU transfer Luke Sprague led the way. He was sharp and hit his brother Cole on a 41 yard touchdown pass to put the Lions up 13-0. Luke stayed in the pocket and delivered a strike on a key 2nd quarter drive. Overall he spread the ball out to several receivers.

After a 13-0 lead going into halftime, the 3rd quarter began with an outstanding interception by Khristan Hernandez. One of the top Juco corners  in the country, he made 2 great plays in a row and the interception below was top notch.

This set the Lions on their way as the offense took over and marched down the field. The drive was 10 plays and 80 yards. It was finished with a beautiful 25 yard strike from Cole Sprague to Josh Limage.

The final touchdown came after another great return by Deyvon Wright. He returned a punt to the 8 yard line. From their Kayee Williams punched it in to finish off the scoring with 2 great blocks from Ethan Bonachi and Josh Becote. That put the Lions up 27-0. They gave up a late touchdown and ended up with a 27-7 victory.

The Ravens Read QB Counter game

 RAVENS QB COUNTER GAME

The Ravens do a great job in their run game. They have a tremendously gifted running qb who causes real issues for defenses.
The past few years they started running qb counter with a read variation.

The way the play is run,   Lamar can either give it to the running back/jet man  if the de stays home or pull it if the de takes the jet and folow the guard and tackle on the counter play.

An added component in addition to the zone read and power game is the qb counter play, They have the jet/rb go one way on a outside zone path and have the guard and tackle pull the other way and Lamar reads the de. This play has been very deadly for them this year.

They love to run it out of 21 personnel and often split the 2nd rb out and bring him back in with jet motion.

Lets look at the play and some examples.
#1
3rd and 2 vs the Giants.
The giants sit the defensive end so Lamar gives it to the jet man on lead sweep. They get an easy 7 yards on the play. They get a nice 8 yard gain and maybe a td if not for a shoestring tackle.

On 1st and 10 in the red zone, the Ravens run it again for 17 yards. Lamar gets another give read and a great lead block from the rb. The giants are in a weird alignment with de in a 4i which makes this an easy give and they are outnumbered weak with only 3 players on the weak side.

You can see the g/t counter element with the guard and tackle pulling.

On 3rd and 4, the Ravens get a 5 man box. They run the ball due to it. They get a nice double team with a lead from the guard and tackle. A nice 8 yard gain. The de gives a keep read and Lamar runs it for 8 yards.

Here is the film:

Here they run it vs the Giants for 17 yards. Later for another 20. 3 for 45 yards.

On a 2nd and 10 they run it again and Lamar makes the read and keeps it for 20 yards.

Vs the Cowboys they used it in short yardage and killed the cowboys with it. This is a very hard play to defend.  Ran it 2 time for 56 yards.

Here they run it vs the Browns and Lamar gets a keep read and takes off in the b gap.

Vs the Bengals
They have counter action one way and are reading the defensive end the other way on a read play. The counter action draws the play side Lb. Lamar reads the right defensive end who loses leverage so he gives the football.

Vs the Jaguars,
They ran the play 3 times vs the  Jaguars.
Here are videos of the 3 clips. Easy read for Lamar and positive yards on all 3 versions of it during the Jacksonville game.

This is a very big part of the Ravens run game. they do a great job with it and it's a very integral part of their run game.

Jet sweep, motion, plays variations and reactions it causes from defenses

I am now on substack, see my stuff their 14 days FREE!!!

www.coachkoufootball.substack.com/14day

Jet Motion  and plays off it:

This article looks at the jet sweep action and how it is utilized at the NFL and College Level:
1. How to get the ball on the edge
2. The Jet sweep action displaces LB's and causes gaps to be vacated
3. Great action to throw off of as it slows down pass rushes.
4. Awesome to incorporate split zone schemes to and away from the Jet motion

Part 1-11 personnel
Part 2-12 personnel

Part 1
11 personnel
New Jet sweep to the boundary vs press bail, press quarter concepts.
They go from 3x1 to 2x2 and catch Michigan on 2 occasions.

#1 Wr goes jet motion 11 personnel
#2 fake the wide zone to the left

Jet motion man runs a wheel. Also have the te to the flat freezing the outside linebacker.
Nice execution as the wheel route is wide open.

TE Screen is a great play out of 11 vs man free coverage.
It gets 2 blockers out in front and the tight end is hard to cover because it is man free and he comes across the formation.
Nice design below.

Fake the jet left
fake the run behind it to the left

They sneak the tight end out off to the right with 2 lead blockers in front.
Nice job getting 2 lineman out in front.

Excellent design
Rams vs Colts:
11 personnel
Colts in man and CB are traveling with motion and when they go behind the LOS post snap.
Well, the Jet motion gets movement but in this situation, Cooper Kupp coming behind the LOS across like boot opens up the Edge and they get a nice 20 yard gain.
Nice design as you see the db whose a d gap player go with Kupp which leaves no safety to fold back inside.
They love to bring Kupp back behind the line of scrimmage off wide zone
You can see him coming across
He's wide open in the flat as the defense reacts to the run.
Nice 15 yard completion.

New:
11 personnel
Running jet allows you to run various pass routes like dover and sail to it. It really can freeze the olb.
#1
Bills run Jet with a fake power and hit the tight end over the middle for a nice gain. Bills stretch NE horizontally with the Jet motion and hit the TE vertically down the field.
Faking the Jet tight zone frees up the dover route vs cover 3
Nice play as the tight end is wide open on the route as the olb is forced to widen with the jet motion.

15 good yards on the play.

11 personnel with z off.
Bring the z in motion.

They fake the jet and tight zone to the right.
They slide protect

They run the sail concept.
#2 runs a 12 yard out with the jet man freezing the OLB and getting him to react.
The CB has to cover #1 vertical.

The sail route is wide open as they are in 3 carry. Nice 40 yard gain for a td.

Good design and execution.

49ers 2021

They use jet sweep and will use the h back in various type of run schemes. Here they run jet and then a toss wind back play where it is a designed cutback.
fake the jet
running back gets the toss and he winds it back.

THE 49ERS VS THE RAMS 2020

THE 49ERS RAN 5 JET SWEEP COMPONENTS FOR 83 YARDS AND A TD AGAINST THE RAMS.

THEY STRETCHED THE FIELD ALL GAME RUNNING JET SWEEP, TOSS, OUTSIDE ZONE-SWING RPO AND MORE.

THEY REALLY BEAT THE RAMS UP ON THE PERIMETER

HERE I WILL SHOW THE 4 JET SWEEPS AND HOW AN EFFECTIVE JET SWEEP OPENED UP THE TIGHT END SCREEN THEY RAN.

5 JET SWEEP COMPONENTS FOR 83 YARDS IS PRETTY EFFICIENT.
Here is the one way they blocked it.

5 clips of Jet components  including the screen to Kittle.

New:
11 personnel
Wisconsin uses Jet sweep vs Michigan a very heavy man free team defensively. Michigan spins the secondary with motion, the motion man is picked up by the safety and the other safety spins leaving no alley defender. Wisconsin runs counter for a 76 yard touchdown.
Nice design.
When teams spin it will open up the cut back or run lane the other way.
See it developing as they spin it.
safety spin opens things up.
big run and touchdown.

12 personnel
Jet can be a great play with wide zone or run action the other way if teams are spinning with their safeties.

UCLA Offense:
Jet with wide zone off slice blocking to the opposite side.
Here you get jet motion followed by a slice blocking scheme. Very effective when going against a team that runs man coverage concepts with secondary spinning.
12 slice as they create a void.
Ucla catches the defense spinning.
nice design.
The Safety runs with the motion.
It opens up the running lane the other way.
OT picks up the pressure and they get the ball on the edge vs man coverage.
Good play and execution.
Here's 2 clips of the play. Jet/Slice Zone
12 personnel
Kentucky runs jet sweep to the 12 technique side.
They get an under front and leave the DE in a 9.
Nice scheme and design.
They get the edge sealed.
Nice job reaching the end man on the line of scrimmage.
good play and excellent gain.

College Game
21 personnel
Naked Boot with a 2 man pattern to the tight end side off the jet fake. Very hard route to defend in man coverage.
fake the jet and slip the fb to the flat with the TE corner route.
TE Runs the corner and the fullback is open in the flat. Nice route out of 21.
Good play and execution.

21 The Bears come out in 21 personnel with 2 hb in the game.
run split zone off the Jet motion and get the B gap to be vacated by the LB who bumps to the offensive left with the motion.

fake jet and run split zone.
Nice job on the combos and the RB makes a nice cut as the b gap is wide open.

Leads to a nice 12 yard gain.
13 Personnel
New: The Colts go 13 personnel
They run jet sweep for 37 yards to the tight end wing Side vs a 3-4 cover 2 look. Nice design and sealing the edge for a nice 37 yard gain.

Good scheme out of 13 personnel.
Nice design and #'s on the perimeter.
nice gain.

The 49ers and Rams are 2 teams that use the concept to get an advantage in the run game.

49ERS VS THE GIANTS
Play Action

In the picture below: Mullens is at qb and Reed is the tight end.
Watch the great play action with Mullens and reed, faking the jet to the right , then the wide zone left and hitting the tight end on the crossing route for a 15 yard gain.

The 49ers run a nice screen back to the Jet sweep man. They run it to the same player that goes in motion.
They fake the jet sail concept and set up the screen.
Nice fake and they get some blockers out in front.
Good play and design.

THE RAMS

The Rams use Jet sweep in a variety of ways. They cause problems for defenses because they almost force you to play zone against them in early downs.
1. Jet Sweep
2. Zone running game off it
3. Play action with some half role and boot components
4. Screen game
5. Throwing it to the motion man (Eagles, last video)

The Rams use so much Jet sweep motion and have great success with it.  Remember Jet is a motion not a play.

The Rams like it under center for the following reasons:

1. They can run jet and a complimentary run game off it

2. They get great play action off it, freeze lb and create throwing windows. They can also move the qb with some half roll action off it.

3. They are able to dictate coverage which increases your qb efficiency. They  get a lot of zone coverage on early downs because if you go man they just run jet which is tough to defend in man. This opens up passing lane windows and routes behind the linebackers because of the soft zone you get.

4. By formation and motions you get reactions from the defense. Either you get secondary rotations or teams will bump the linebackers and cause major cut back lanes and great angles for your offensive line and tight ends.  You see this in the 2 clips below.

INSIDE RUN GAME

#1

The first play on this clip. The Rams are in 12 personnel. They line up 2 tight ends in a tight wing formation  left with a condensed 2 wr set on the right. They run the inside wr in jet motion.

The Bills bump with their linebackers with the Jet Motion but makes them vulnerable. It allows the Rams to get their Offensive tackle up to the SS which is a mismatch after the tight end comes back and blocks the defensive end. It's a simple inside zone scheme but they create good angles for themselves. The center and right guard combo the nose to the mike lb and have easy blocks due to the Jet Motion. The LG and Lt can just go solo because the play side linebacker jumped outside to play the Jet. An excellent designed run play. 12 yard gain.

2 video clips are shown :

#2 on the clip is explained below

The next play is run out of 11 personnel. The Rams line up in a bunch set with the tight end as the # 3 wr inside. They run jet motion to their left which causes a reaction with the linebackers. They bump and it allows the right guard and right tackle to get a great double team up to the linebacker. The tight end does a great job with a pancake block on the safety and they  create great angles for themselves. Look at the centers block on the mike. Well designed play and they get a 14 yard gain.

PLAY ACTION

Now lets look at the play action pass game off the jet sweep action. The Jet sweep zone fake option freezes the linebackers and allows the Rams to throw the ball behind defenses.

Look at the 2 clips below which are vs. the Bills in week 3:

1. The Rams get a cover 2 look out of the Bills. The Bills cb sits and plays the jet motion man, the linebackers have to play run with the inside zone run action  and look at the hole in the Bills defense.

2. In the 3rd quarter the Rams run play action off the jet motion. They   fake the jet and fake the inside zone and run a flood concept to the side of the jet motion. Bills are in cover 2 and that is a very difficult route concept to cover. Again, because the Rams were having so much success with the run game earlier, this set up the play action later in the game.

JET SWEEP

Rams ran Jet sweep twice for 24 yards against the Bills.

The first play they run it they run it out of 12 personnel, ace formation.

You see the action by the offensive tackle that holds the defensive end and play side linebacker. Zone flow away from this play sells it and the tight end arcs and blocks the strong safety. If the tight end continues his path and blocks the safety it may bring even more yardage.

They run Jet sweep again below. Here you see why Jet is dangerous vs man to man. How if you don't spin the coverage as a secondary you can have major issues in man free vs jet motion. Pro teams are more about match ups while you'll see more college teams bring the safety down and put the cb in centerfield with the motion.

NOTE: The Rams know its man free by dictating coverage and that subtle shift with Kupp. They may not run Jet here if they get zone. But, the shift presnap tells them its man free so they run Jet sweep.

Again, they give the defensive end a zone blocking look so they don't have to block him and they get Kupp on the ss. Woods in space against a cb running across the field is a tough thing for a cb. They know the Bills aren't going to spin it and roll the free safety down and put the cb in the middle of the field so its another big 15 yard gain.

MISDIRECTION

The Jet sweep has always been a great play on the goal line because you get some man coverage down there. The Rams take it to another level with the jet reverse.

Again the Rams dictate coverage with shifting pre snap. Once they get the shift they know its man. So, this is a great play design by the Rams. The Eagles try to spin the coverage. The Rams run an out cut with the wr on the bottom to get him out of the picture and all the misdirection with the Jet sweep make it impossible to defend. The cb is responsible for Woods and never gonna get there. Also, they have a lead blocker with the tight end in 11 personnel.

SCREEN GAME

The Rams also run screens with it. They run the Jet,zone action and just run a simple screen back to the rb. They ran the same play against the Bills in week 3. Same misdirection with traditional screen blocking. The Eagles are in zone coverage and don't do a horrible job sniffing it out. But, the Rams still get the ball out and get 12 yards on it.

The next video shows the Rams running Jet screen to the wr in motion. They Rams dictate the coverage again and run it vs zone coverage.  Just that subtle motion tells them its zone. They do a good job getting out on it and hit the Cowboys for a big gain. They run it to perfection with both guards and the center getting down field for a 30 yard gain.

The 2nd time they run screen vs the Cowboys they do it with the running back. Again, they fake the jet, inside run game off it and hit the running back for a big game. You see how well they package the plays and make it very difficult to defend.
Play action

Eagles fake the jet motion and hit the tight end on the deep over route vs the giants. Giants in zone coverage and all the window dressing motion opens up the middle of the field.

They jet the motion man back the other way as giants are in zone.
Jet motion confuses the giants as it opens the dover route over the middle.
The RB to the flat opens the middle of the field as they get the vertical stretch they want on the play.

Nice 15 yard gain to the tight end on the play

THROW THE BALL TO THE JET MAN!

The Eagles do something I don't wonder why more teams do it and that's to throw the ball to the wr in the Jet Motion. #1 -most teams ignore him. #2 It frees up the wr for some vertical routes- deep out post corner, etc because the cb can't hang on #1.

Packers 3 clips with Jet Motion-all playactions vs Saints.
Now you see the Packers run it.
#1They fake the jet sweep, inside zone and boot and hit the wr coming across behind the formation

#2 They fake jet and zone and stay in the pocket this time and He hits the tight end.

#3 They fake jet sweep, inside zone and boot and hit the deep 9 with the dover route. They slowed the Saints good pass rush with the jet fake and zone action.

3 Packers Jet Clips below:

Here the Cardinals run Jet Sweep wheel route vs. The Seahawks cover 3

Nice route and adjustment

Nie route and adjustment vs cover 3

Good play and execution.

The 49ers run do so many things and really do a great job moving their qb with play action, designed boots and really make average qb look really good. They don't have the greatest weapons at wr and tight end but they are so good schematically. They do have a great offensive line and really make the most out of their personnel.

jet sweep vs the Giants 3-4 defense.

They leave the 5 technique unblocked, seal the perimeter and pick up 9 yards vs. The Giants.

The next 2 plays are variations of Jet. The 1st is play action where they get jet action one way, outside zone the other and then hit the tight end over the middle.

The 2nd jet play action is a boot where all action, the jet and half back fake all  goes the one way and they try to hit the wr behind the line of scrimmage with 2 crossing routes.

The giants do a good job collisioning the wr coming across and disrupting the play. Good play design but good execution by the giants.

The Packers run the Jet Sweep against the vikings. They don't block the play side defensive end because they are in a 4-3 and the Packers show zone the other way. The 5 technique is not a factor and it allows them to go 2x2 with the tight end on the play side lb and the wr on the cb.
Good design by the Packers.

week 9
Packers run Jet counter with a duo blocking scheme.

The Chiefs like to run Jet sweep with motioning the wr to the other side and then bringing him back. Here's a look at the Chiefs version.

Unbalanced flea flicker off the jet sweep.

Georgia 12 personnel. Unbalanced into the boundary

Run jet motion with a flea flicker and hit the jet man down the sideline. Nice design that could also be run with simple play action. Nice scheme

Hope you liked the Jet Sweep series!
