Lincoln Riley Offense Part 4-red zone and goal line playbook

This is part 4 of my Lincoln Riley Offensive Series.

This section looks at some of his red zone & short yardage concepts. He does a nice job with his red zone package and has some staple concepts on the goal line.

#1 is a run pass option.

He runs a simple play where it is very similar to triple option. He reads the DE for the dive and will throw the ball to the h back or #3 wr off the fake if the OLB is leveraged. It seems to be  a staple for him.

He loves to leak a wr or h back away from the action often in the red zone!

This is shown below!

2 back bootleg

Now, this may be an Rpo and has some zone read elements, with the Qb reading the DE, the nice part about this it is a designed pass to the HB and the wr are blocking downfield, which makes me thing it's an RPO. If the DE Takes QB I assume he gives it.

Nice job on the boot

Here's the same play at USC in the red zone when they played Utah. The difference is really just the formation.

Another short yardage play when they go tempo on 1st and goal on the 2 yard line. The only difference is they do it with the wr on the los in the h back spot but is essentially the same play.

Nice Run pass option.

hits the h coming across the formation

Another great play on the goal line is displayed below:
12 personnel
Play action-fake to the back throw to the back
Excellent design vs man coverage.
The back gets a nice pick route by the wr.
He's wide open off of the fake.

Easy catch and throw.

Trips bunch right, back weak with TE
Fake the Jet left , fake tight zone rt  and hit the TE on the TE dump.
Nice concept vs Man coverage
Tons of window dressing on this play.

nice fake on the jet, nice fake wide zone the other way and the TE is wide open on the dump on the left hand side.
see the DB chasing the jet man
LB loses the tight end.
Jet man draws the defense TE wide open.

3x1 bunch.
They ran this play 2 times vs Tulane.
Nice route concept
Hit it both times 1st time was the wr on the line.

The 2nd time was the wr trailing the endline.

Nice design

WR is wide open

Easy completion in the bunch route.

NFL Top Short yardage and Goalline Plays for your Offense

NFL and College top short yardage and red zone plays from the 10 and in.

Ohio Goes unbalanced rt, runs jet motion and throws the ball to the jet man. Man coverage and tough for the cb to cover as their are several pick routes along the way. Nice design by Ohio.

Falcons run the old bullet screen.

It is a screen designed to read either the tackle or end. In this situation, the rb bluffs blocking the end and turns around. They make it look like slide protection and do a nice job with it. Once the RB passes the de he turns around.

The tackle goes down field and the uncovered interior guard or center(center here) releases down field. The other 3 o lineman block their guys

Here is the clip

Atlanta will run the rb to the trips side from the other side of the formation. NE tries to peel the LB on the RB and he gets picked on the nicely designed play. Ne will often try to peel their olb with flat action by the rb in their man schemes so this is a  well executed play.

Here is the clip of the play.

Vs the Saints the Falcons run a shovel pass toss option. The De runs upfield give the ball to the slot on the shovel pass. Nice design with the guard leading. If the De stays inside give the ball to the rb on the perimeter(Matt Ryan is not running the ball)

My 4th play is my favorite.

4th and 1
Fake to the rb and give him the ball in the air to the same side. The hb is usually open on this, especially in 12, 21 or 13 personnel.

fake to the rb and throw it to him in the flat. Nice design by the falcons. They send the fullback opposite and get a nice pick from the te. Tough to defend on 4th and 1 in man coverage.

Here's the clip with the description above

The Flip Play,
Great off the qb sneak when teams try to stack the middle of the defense.
Jaguars run it on 3rd and 1 for a 1st down.

Here's one from Northwestern.
Start out in wildcat, shift to under center and try to draw them offsides, that doesn't work so they check the play to power pass for the first down.
Excellent design.
wildcat
motion qb back to under center
shift to pro I strong with wr condensed.
Go play action with the TE on the post corner and FB to the flat.
Great play design and execution.

Hope you enjoyed these 5 plays and look for more in the future!
