QB designed runs, Pin and Pull counter, read at the College and NFL Level

Some QB Designed Runs Below

This article looks at the numerous run schemes you will see utilizing the qb as a runner.

Pin and Pull
Lets look at the pin and pull concept that is becoming popular at the college level. Here are some different ways teams run the QB Pin and Pull.

Oklahoma 2019 with Hurts is one example. Pull 2 guards and get the rb as a lead blocker.

Another qb run with Murray as the qb

The G-T Counter  and QB Counter game
You  can run it out of 10 personnel, 20 and 21. They would often run it out of 2o or 21 to give them a lead blocker to the play side on the alley defender. Here are a few ways they ran it.
2018

Offense in 10 personnel, they get a light box and run it to the weak side. Thy do a nice job and Murray breaks it for 40 as they run the QB counter

Teams like UCLA will utilize the QB pin and pull with a lead blocker who is the rb.

2. Here are some other. qb schemes and rules:

Uncovered lineman will pull. In this situation you get a 3 technique and a shade on the backside.

TE=block the 6i

OT=3 tech

PSG= pull first thing outside

Center=shade

BSG=pull

BST= 5 tech

Now with an end outside, you will often get a kickout by the playside lineman.

Here the Bills run it out of 12 personnel

3  QB Pin and Pull:

The Bills love the pin and pull scheme. They will run it at times as a qb pin and pull.

Here they run it in the playoffs vs. The Patriots.

In this example, you get a  bear front. The Bills pull the Center and right guard and get a good down block from the tight end and wing. The backside cuts off the nose and defensive tackle. More of a bash concept but still a nice designed run.

Due to the wide outside linebacker the Guard ends up kicking out the outside linebacker and the center turns up for the seal.

Here they run a similar play vs the Texans They get the nice seal and down blocks and Allen gets a huge gain off the jet action the other way. The Texans are in the under front and you'll see the clip below.

Here's a nice qb run for 40 plus yards.

Bonus clip vs the Jets
They motion to empty as the Jets are in the bear front. Get the guard and tackle on the perimeter.
The Bear front with the 6i gives them good angles. Man free forces the Mike outside the box.

Texas QB Pin and Pull out of empty
TE comes down and cracks the 5
WR blocks #2
G and Tackle get on the edge

Oregon Empty Pin and Pull
They design a nice QB pin and pull off of motion. They get both the LB and CB to react and get a nice surface with the 6i to the tight end. Stanford OLB cuts the guard and does a decent job but the QB makes a nice run for a 12 yard gain.

QB Counter
Ole Miss 3rd and 4
out of empty
They motion to 4x1 the defense adjusts and they run counter the other way

Defense shifts with motion
Nice Counter scheme with excellent blocking.
Nice kickoff by the guard and lead by the h back. Nice design.

Ole Miss runs a read with a wrap scheme against Arkansas with a pull on the backside. Leave the 5 technique and wrap the guard on the LB.

3rd and 8

Qb Draw out of 4x1 formation. They motion to empty and trap Hutchinson with the Guard,

A nice scheme vs the load front. Guard pulls and kicks out Hutchinson with a down block from the OT.

QB Counter with RPO attachment
Indiana Runs QB Counter off RPO action.
You can run this out of 2x2 or 3x1 with any rpo or screen action you want.

Michigan 12 personnel zone read package with 2 pullers.

 12 personnel zone read

You are starting to see more zone read out of 12 personnel with 2 h backs as pullers. It's a popular play youll see against teams both who spill as well as teams that don't because if the qb pulls the ball he will have 2 blockers on the perimeter. It is also effective against teams who want to spill everything as your pullers can read the spill and get around them to the 2nd level.

Many times teams will read the spiller and avoid him if he's looking to spill. It becomes a very effective concept.

Michigan, Kansas and the Ravens are the teams I have seen utilize the concept.

Michigan runs it as well as other teams.

Kansas below with both running backs in the backfield.

See the 2 h backs lead the play.
Good execution and they read the DE.
Get 2 h backs on the edge
QB keeps for a nice gain.

Another version of the same play. This time they come out in 3x1 and come back to the single side with it. Nice job of getting both h backs out in front and this play is a touchdown if the safety doesn't Make a great play. Penn State was trying to spill it and the h backs read it and get on the edge. Again a great scheme and Nice play by the Penn State td stopping it from being a td.

Great when teams try to spill it.

Gets the qb on the edge with 2 pullers.

2 lead blockers in space.
Tough to defend

One more version of the play for a nice 15 yard gain.

Different set
but they motion one h across and then lead with the other one.

DE comes down to play the rb and qb pulls it for a big gain.

Gets on the edge with 2 blockers
Excellent design and another big gain.

More to come!
Great play and excellent design by Michigan and Kansas.

Notes to self!
