Coaching College & NFL football run game-same side read power and Bash Concepts

BASH AND QB READ POWER

This post will look at some of the same side reads. Meaning the read comes to the direction the running back or jet man is going. This is a designed read that can be a give to the rb on the perimeter with a handoff or a man in jet motion. Either are effective. The 2nd component is the power element if the player being read plays the rb or jet man. Thus, it becomes a qb run if the player you are reading stays outside.

Let's start with the Power Read:

1. Same Side Power/Wrap Read Play

Concept is running the run action to the same side of the action. This is a same side concept where the run action is going in the direction of the run play.

You will see teams run power read or wrap read to the same side. Some teams cal it a dart scheme. They will read the DE and block the appropriate scheme.

From empty they motion the rb back.

Ole Miss is another team that utilizes the concept.

They run it off of jet motion:

The DE is the read key and he comes hard inside so they give the ball to the jet sweep.

Here are a few examples of where the qb got a keep read because the read key widened.

2 clips where the same scheme is executed and the read dictates the qb run.

Now for the bash concept

2. Bash

The bash read stands for back away and involves the running back running backside sweep in direction, and the line blocking frontside for the quarterback should he pull the ball. The beauty of the bash concept is that it goes with any run play. You can change the scheme for the qb which is the great part of the play and what makes it so hard to defend.

You will see it with some of the following schemes:

1. inside zone

2. counter(below)

3. G/T wrap (below)

These are just some of the ways and we will look more closely at them.

INSIDE ZONE

Penn State reads the front side end and has zone blocking in the other direction. The QB reads the front side end and gives the ball. If the DE went hard outside then he would keep it and run the ball inside with the inside zone blocking scheme.

COUNTER

The Ravens are one of the best at it. They run it here with their jet motion.

On 1st and 10 in the red zone, the Ravens run it again for 17 yards. Lamar gets another give read and a great lead block from the rb. The giants are in a weird alignment with de in a 4i which makes this an easy give and they are outnumbered weak with only 3 players on the weak side.

You can see the g/t counter element with the guard and tackle pulling.

T WRAP
The Bills T Wrap off the bash.

Here are just some of the concepts you will see from NFL and college football teams.

Chiefs cover 2 5 man pressure vs Jaguars Playoffs 2022

Jags motion to 2x2

You have 2 curl defenders mike and the DT that drop out to play the curl
The blitz gets home with someone in Lawrences face as he throws. They

They force the protection and back on the sam. The LT and LG are 2 slow to react and get out on that side with the DT dropping.

Nice design as the Jaguars full slide but the RB can't work back because of the edge pressure his side.

4th quarter game on the line
Similar type cover 2 pressure
First the cover 2 pressure.
PRESNAP-Its a cover 1 look presnap.
They bring 4 to a side, they bring the will and nickel to the tight end side of 2x2.
They drop the strong side defensive end. The DT contain rushes.

They get great pressure with the 4 to a side blitz. The Nickel and LB both go inside and the LB comes untouched and forces an immediate throw.
Nice job showing single high and getting to cover 2.

Cb up top does Nice job sinking as no threat from #2

Bengals vs Chiefs

Bengals bring 4 from 4-2 look.

Presnap looks like single high with the mike LB showing.  Do a ice job of creating a mismatch with the RB on the LB.

They have the LB on the right show and try to get a match up on the Chiefs RB McKinnon. They have success but Mahomes does a great job escaping the pressure.

Good pressure but Mahomes is Mahomes as they go overload and drop.

Mahomes moves off his spot and is forced to scramble. Excellent coverage downfield.

COVER 2/4 Variations

The Ravens vs the Browns
4/2read
week 1 3rd and 10
Pressure 4 man fire zone
3-4 personnel
The Ravens bring some 4 man fire zones vs the Browns. They rush 4 to the boundary with the nose being contain. They drop the def lineman in cover 4 and he gets in the throwing lane.
Excellent work by the defensive end and a nice design by the Ravens.

The Chiefs.
Here are a few fire zones from Steve Spagnola.
2nd and 8 vs the Bills in the AFC Championship 2 years ago
Personnel: Nickel 4-2
Blitz: Double edge
Coverage: Cover 2

They Drop the DT to play one of the hooks as they bring 2 off the edge

The blitzing LB gets home as the Bills are late to react with the nice cover 2 fire zone

Here's Notre Dame 5 man pressure vs 11 personnel on 1st and 10
Play under front and bring the sam and ss off the edge. Drop the weakside end to the flat.

1st and 10
Patriots vs the Titans
Titans run a c-6 which just means cover 4 to the formation strength and cover 2 to the boundary. They buzz the olb and buzz it well.

Utah Scalley,

Bear
Cover 2
Below is an example of how you can play cover 2 with the de playing as the hook player in bear.
You can play the coverage by dropping your will , who is on the los and your DE to the hook,You can send the mike. This is just one option. You can also rush the end and drop the mike into the hook and send a 4 man pressure that way as well.

You can see the defensive end playing the middle hook and walling #3

Here's another  simple cover 2 pressure by Coach Scalley at Utah. An excellent job with the blitz and pass rush 5 man game. They run a nice cross dog with a line stunt inside.
