Lets look at some screens and the way some of the teams are running them in todays NFL.
Types of screens you will see as you read:
- TE Screens
- RB Screens
- Screens off of motion(jet, orbit)
- play action
- now & alley screens
- 4 over 3 or 3 over 2 bubble screens
- bullet screens (quick screen off a dlineman)
1. TE screens
The 2 screens below involve the best tight ends in the game, Kittle and Kelce. The thing I love is the way both Shanahan and Reid create a horizontal stretch with the motion and rb to open up the middle of the field
Higbie rams TE screen vs anticipated pressure. Coach Mcvay anticipates the pressure by Coach Carroll and runs the te screen at it.
This one is one of my favorites to Kittle. The 49ers are known to motion across when they run screens. If they don't like the coverage they may can the screen and run a different play.

They get the Center and RT out on the screen on the excellent screen design.
2. RB screens to the same side of formation
NEW: Rams screen out of empty to the Rb.
Nice design vs anticipated pressure vs the Hawks.
As usual, the whole NFL tells Andy Reid the coverage when he puts a rb out wide. Here its zone which sets up the screen because the cb stays out on the rb.
3. Screens off Jet motion
Here the Rams run it off play action
They fake the jet, fake to the rb, then throw the ball back to the running back.
Good play because teams will play zone vs Jet motion and that allows softer coverage under neath for the screen game.
The 49ers fake the jet sweep and hit the jet man off the boot action the other way.
4.Play action misdirection with rb:
The Cardinals are in 20 personnel.
They fake to one back and throw to the other on the swing screen with the wr cracking and the tackle pulling vs the Steelers
5. Play action off the reverse screen
The Eagles fake the zone fake the reverse and throw it to the rb.
6. Now screens, bubble and hb to the flat when you get 3 over 2.
The Bears:
They motion Patterson out of the backfield: nice 8 yard gain.
Here the 49ers motion to it and throw the screen to the rb and combine it with the wide zone.
7. 4 over 3 screens
In this case Washington State runs a nice 4 over 3 screen while motioning the rb. They run a slant with #1 and #2 who set picks on the lb.
Rb motions out to 3x1 trips side and they throw him the ball when its 4 over 3. Combine that with a slant/out to the single side as an option route. Here the cardinals run it for 8 yards.
8. WR screen off run action
The Eagles fake wide zone vs the Ravens and throw the screen to the wr.
They see its zone with the motion of #3 across and get a good look to run it
If it was man may check out of it.
Tackle blocks alley, Tight end blocks the cb. They get 8 yards on the play.

9. wr screen
The Falcons run it off their zone run action. They get the OT and OG out on the perimeter. Nice scheme as the wr fakes blocking and gets depth for the easy catch and nice 10 yard gain.
3rd and 14 the WFT catch the Steelers for a 31 yard gain as the steelers get fancy disguising and get caught in a soft cover 3. Down 14-0 changed the outlook of the game.
Here the Cardinals run a screen out of empty and 10 personnel one 3rd and 20. This could also be used as a tight end screen
The wr is in the #3 position. The 49ers stay in there 4-2-5 personnel and don't go dime
Why is that important? 49ers will probably play zone out of this due to some matchup issues so getting a zone look is better from an offensive standpoint to run screen. Db's and lbs are off and will drop and not blitz engage/close on the guy they are convering.
10 yard gain. Could have been more but the guards were late getting out.
10. Quick wr screen
This screen is run out of empty.
The Cardinals pull the whole right side of the line and send the rb up on the cb. The tackle blocks the alley defender. If young doesn't retrace could have been a really big play, but they hold them to 5 yards.
He slips into the open space and has the center fold and lead on the LB
Center makes a nice block downfield for a nice gain.
