Mississippi State 2018 Bob Shoops study-zone and man pressure package

In 2018, Mississippi State was #2 in the country in defense. They were led by Coach Joe Moorhead and the defensive coordinator was Bob Shoop.

KEY STATS

They only allowed 13.8 points per game and were 2nd to only Clemson in 2018.

They were also #1 in yards allowed per game at 263 yards

#4 in 3rd down conversion percentage at 27%.

The defense was primarily a 4-2-5 but for this article I want to look at some of his unique and designed blitzes.

Lets look at both base calls and blitzes and then we can look at some of the blitzes and looks on third down.

Base Blitzes- 2 base blitzes on the early downs are shown.

Blitz #1

Sam and SS off the edge

Coverage 3 under 3 deep

great job everyone in there gap no place to run.

Heres the stunt vs Ole Miss and Steven Austin

#2 same stunt. Ole Miss runs a nice rpo, if they hand it off its an easy tackle for a loss. Offense runs a nice play against it. Slant route on the backside. Nice play call on offense.

rpo vs the blitz pressure below
You can see the de drop vs pass and how it becomes 3 under 3 deep.

Base Blitz #2
they bring the sam and go man free
They combo to the te side with the LB and the CB vs 3x1 with the tight end backside.
Nice pressure and disguise as they show 2 deep pre snap.

3RD DOWN PRESSURES

3rd down fronts they would use which they could pressure out of all of them. Here's an example of a pressure from each front.

Double Mug

3rd and 8
5 man pressure
Cover 3
They go double mug and bring the sam b gap. They also run a game with the mike and dt. A 3 under 3 deep with the DE dropping. Nice design

They run a draw that easily defended.

Video Clip:

3-3 stack
3rd and 8
vs LA Tech, La Tech goes empty.
They run a 3 lb dog with all 3 lb going.
They play cover o
LA tech throws to #2 on the out(hot read) which causes a quick throw and tackle for a 1 yard gain

Load Front

You will often see some 5 man pressures out of the load front.

Here they run a 5 man rush with a  3 man game inside with the lb adding in late. The lb becomes a  6th rusher. On the back end they play man free with no underneath help.

video clip

traditional 4 hands fronts
They will bring the mike in this and play man free or 3 under 3 deep.

These are just some of the clips of the Mississippi State defense under Bob Shoops that year. More will be added.
